The American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) is pleased to share that BirdNote is now preserved and streaming online in the archive. The collection contains audio files and transcripts from BirdNote, which is a daily public media program that brings joy, inspiration, and hope to people who value birds and the environment. Each episode is approximately two minutes long, immersing listeners in the amazing lives and sounds of birds. Blending art, science, nature, and messages of conservation successes, BirdNote has covered hundreds of species of birds.
BirdNote began in 2004 under the auspices of Seattle Audubon, making its way to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2006. BirdNote began submitting episodes to the American Archive of Public Broadcasting in 2019, and materials continue to be added to this collection.
Featured items include Birdwatchers Lingo, The Auklet’s Whiskers – Not Just for Show, Cuban Giant Owls, Hearing Loss and Birds, and Father Birds.

In writing the BirdNote special collection, one of the unusual characteristics of the collection is that materials are still being added to it. As a result, it is important that the “Featured Items” section represents the full scope of the collection. The featured items currently include materials from January – September 2019, but be sure to keep an eye out for changes to the “Featured Items” section as we add materials.
In choosing what items to feature, I decided to include materials discussing a spectrum of subjects so that the collection could have as much reach as possible. For example, as somebody who does not know much about birds or birdwatching, I thought it was especially important to include the “Birdwatcher Lingo” episode as a way of providing a quick introduction to the world of birdwatching. Other featured items explore a variety subjects, including history, conservation, urbanization, health, family, and science.
